Abstract

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are being used due to their excellent antimicrobial characteristics. The dental area is constantly updated, AgNPs are an option to be incorporated into dental healing and irrigation materials to improve their antibacterial effect and thus be able to combat pathogenic microorganisms more efficiently, since AgNPs are can be used against microorganisms resistant to antibiotics. The objective of this work is to identify the properties and applications of AgNPs in the dental field. This review includes various investigations on AgNPs in different fields of dentistry such as orthodontics, periodontics, dental and restorative materials, since due to their unique properties these particles have an antibacterial, antibiofilm and antifungal effect of great utility in the dental practice.
